This first music video is by a band called "Sleeping with Sirens" who are an American post-hardcore band. The song is called "If You Can't Hang". The reason I am using this video as an example, is because this certain genre solely focuses on the band and their image rather than trying to tell a story behind the song. They are promoting the band by shooting the music video around the band. The background to the music video is dark, with shining bright non ambient lighting, highlighting the fact that as post hardcore isn't a very popular genre, compared to pop, they are more isolated. The use of water as an effect creates a more interesting video to watch, so when the camera zooms out and is shooting the whole scene it makes the floor reflective, making it seem likes its being shot outside and in an urban area. The mise en scene of the music video is quite dark and dismal, apart from the main singer, which has been done deliberately to make him stand out from the rest of them, who are blending into the background. This music video compared to others is very low key, only really focusing in on the band and their music.
Crystal Castles - Baptism.
This genre of music is much more electronic. The type of music in the video is much more alternative and less well known in todays society, which links with the whole idea of the music video being very random and unstructed. There is no plot or background to the video, it is basically just a lot of shots of Alice Glass (The Singer) with added affects to make her seem double etc. I like this as it fits with the song. The video highlights how you should feel whilst listening to the track (Presented with Alice Glass dancing whilst singing) Its going against what is normally put into a music video, as it has no back story apart from the short image we see of the baby being baptised which links in with the name of the song, but other than that the video has no link between the song lyrics and the images shown. Like the first music video I selected, again it focuses on the main singer, making them stand out from the rest of the video. This one does inco-operate the other band players but having them wear masks makes them less important compared to Alice Glass. The editing and camera work is quite chaotic which compliments the song as this has a fast beat too it.
Plain White T's - Hey There Delilah.
This last music video is one of my favourites as it uses a different effect that is not normally found in music videos, and has a plot line to it. The 3 split screens in the video allows them to tell two different stories and shoot it in two different locations allowing the audience to compare them together. Allowing contrast within it. Even though the video does focus in on the singer it also includes a story to back the lyrics up within the song. The camera movement of the story is handheld, making it far more rough which I like as it makes it seem more life like rather than being shot for a music video, compared to the professional camera work which is very sharp and bold, when filming the lead singer. The colours in the split screen also contrast each other, when focusing on the backing story, the mise en scene is much more city like, with dark colours and bright flashing lights. When shooting the lead singer its much more light and gives the impression of a recording studio.

  1. Re Sleeping with Sirens music video which is performance based. To strengthen your post try to focus on the way genre is communicated in the music video. Noir lighting, (try to remember technical terms for lighting), lots of muscle and so on. You could google generic conventions of hard core metal/rock. Note the way masculinity is emphasised because audiences of hard core bands expect this, also some hard core metal bands have been accused of racism, this is also another area you could research.

  2. Re Crystal Castles' "Baptism" - to strengthen you could again focus on media language and reference Goodwin's Theory regarding closeups of the artist particularly the sexualised closeups of the artist'slips and mouth; also note the genre characteristics - dance genre. Note how the artist is being heavily promoted.

  3. Re Plain White T's: Keep working on media language, instead of story use narrative structure and in this case the narrative structure is a montage narrative (Goodwin) where the lyrics are amplified by the visuals. The genre needs to be identified and references to how genre is reflected in aspects of mise-en-scene.

I'd suggest you construct a developed analysis of one of these music videos, the Plain White t's perhaps being the most suitable, but try to strenthen your commentaries.

Well done Billie, a good start to Year 13.
